I came across this short article and wanted to share it here on the devotional page of our website. I pray it challenges you! - Pastor Steve Saiz

"Presence of mind," an interesting phrase typically used to describe the ability to remain calm and steady when facing a stressful situation. "She had the presence of mind to turn into the skid to regain control of the car." The idea is to keep one's thought's clear when there are considerable distractions.

However, today I would like to look at twist on the phrase. The idea came when I was wondering how our lives would change if we had the presence of mind to recognize God's presence in every aspect of our lives. It is often easy to see God at work in the big things that happen in life, such as answered prayers or close calls. However, it is more of a challenge to see Him in the small, mundane, daily happenings. Yet, He is there and we are assured of it in the scriptures.

O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. You hem me in--behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain (Psalms 139:1-6).

While I honestly cannot say how much my life would change, I do know it would be in great measures. What I would be doing is, acknowledging God's continual presence in my mind. Allowing God to be revealed in everywhere I go, everything I think, and whatever I do. How could you not be transformed by that?

The question is, "Am I ready to accept the changes that will come from His, "Presence of Mind?" A better question may be, "Am I ready to accept the consequences of continuing in the fog of mind I so often find myself in when I am oblivious to His Presence?"

So, here is the challenge, to start today looking for the ways, from the least to the greatest, in which God is involved in my life, to praise Him as I recognize His work, and allow His presence of mind to change my life.

Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O LORD. They rejoice in your name all day long; they exult in your righteousness (Psalms 89:15-16).

Psalm 119:140 Thy word is very pure; therefore thy servant loveth it.

I love to read the word of God! Last year I decided to read through my Bible. In the thirty-four years since I received the Holy Ghost I had only read through the Bible completely one time! I thought that was terrible and I decided it was time to read through my Bible again! I wasn't "regularly" attending church at the time, just going occasionally with my Mother-in-law. I've always prayed that God would give me a hunger and thirst for His word and His spirit! That prayer was answered! I made a reading plan on a calendar and I read two or three chapters a day. I also have two women's devotional bibles that I was reading and my Daily Guidepost that I read daily! My husband later told me that he knew when I started devouring the Bible like that that something would happen! He was right. When we devour God's word He talks to us! Hebrews 4:12 says"For the word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow and is the discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." That verse tells me that when I read the word of God it gets down into my very soul and being! It works its way into our joints and the marrow of our bones! Psalm 119:169 says ...Let my cry come near before thee, O Lord: give me understanding according to thy word." God's word speaks to us and helps us to understand the path to walk. Psalm 119:105 says."Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." There's a little chorus that we teach our children in Sunday School and Children's Church. The B I B L E, yes, that's the book for me. I stand alone on the word of God, the B I B L E! If we "stand" on the word of God He will make it "a light unto my path"! One of my Granddaughter's graduated from High School last month so I gave her a Bible as a graduation gift. I told her that the Bible is a guidebook to life and if she would read something from it every day God could lead her in the right direction.

In Psalm 119:11 David said..."Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." The word of God gives us direction in how to live a holy, sinless life. The word of God gives us the laws of life that He has set down for us to live by. It tells us what pleases God and what things are an abomination to Him! God didn't mince words when he gave the law to Moses! He was very specific about what was against His law! Some things today that are considered "normal" are considered in the word of God as an abomination!

"And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."
Ephesians 6:17

The Bible is our Sword with which we can battle the evil spirits that are in this world today trying to destroy the good that God has created. If I have "hid the word in my heart" then I can use it against Satan when he tries to attack me. I can say "Thus saith the Lord!"

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Deuteronomy 6:4-7 4) Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord; 5) And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. 6) And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7) And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

We had a baby dedication Sunday. I love seeing young couples dedicate their children to God and make a vow to "train them up in the way they should go." We know that in order to train someone we need to "show" them how to do something. It has always been important to train our children in the ways of God but we have so much more opposition now than we have ever had. I remember in school back in the 1950's we started every school day with prayer and bible reading! Those things aren't allowed in public schools anymore. They even want to take "God" out of our pledge of allegiance! Our children are taught about lifestyles that we know are contrary to the word of God. Our state has even passed a law allowing people in these lifestyles to marry. It is very important to teach our children what the word of God says. We need to "train" our children to be like Jesus. We need to "train" them to talk to Jesus and to read His word. We need to "train" them to be in the house of God where there is a Pastor who watches for their souls. We need to "train" them to respect the house of God and to respect the man who God has called to lead us. The way for us to "train" them is for us to live a holy life in our home, talking to Jesus in their hearing, reading His word in our home, and being faithful to the house of God. We need to "teach these things diligently unto thy children". As parents we get discouraged at times but remember Chronicles 15:7........Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be rewarded.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart: and lean not unto thine own understanding.

In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.

Trust is a mighty big word. My dictionary defines trust as "a reliance on the integrity, veracity, or reliability of a person or a thing--confident expectation; hope." Trust in a relationship is a major factor. When we trust someone we are hoping and believing that they care enough for us that they will look out for us and not do anything to harm us. When we put our trust in God we have confident expectation that we can count on Him to care for us and meet our needs. When we trust Him and acknowledge Him in all our ways He will direct our paths and lead us in the way that we should go! With that direction we can believe that He will protect us. Psalm 91:2 says "I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust." A refuge is "shelter or protection, as from danger or distress." If God is our refuge then we are trusting Him to protect us from danger or distress. That doesn't mean that we will never face danger or distress, it simply means that we can trust Him to be there when we face such things and we can call on Him and trust that He will answer! Psalm 7:1 says"O, Lord my God, in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me." As long as we are living in this world we are going to face distressing situations and people that will persecute us, but we can trust in God to help us through these situations and deliver us from those who persecute us. Psalm 125:1 tells me that "they that trust in the Lord shall be as Mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever." I want to be as Mount Zion and I want to abide forever so I think I will trust in Jesus with all my heart and let Him direct my paths and be my refuge and my fortress!

Psalm 55:17 Evening and morning and at noon will I pray and cry aloud: and He shall hear my voice.

Psalm 6:9 The Lord hath heard my supplication; the Lord will receive my prayer.

Prayer is the most important thing in our relationship with God! In prayer we carry on a conversation with God. It is our line of communication. In any relationship if there is no communication the relationship suffers and deteriorates. Luke 18:1 says ".....men ought always to pray and not to faint." 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says to "Pray without ceasing.". You might say "How can I always be praying when I have a job to go to or a family to care for?",but we can have an attitude of prayer at all times if we choose to! I love a little chorus that says "Bless the Lord, Oh my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name!" I find myself singing it often during the day. I also love a little chorus that goes "Shut in with God in a secret place, there in His presence beholding His face, gaining new power to run in this race, how I long to be shut in with God!" It is imortant to find time each day to get shut in with God and converse with Him. Anytime you spend quality time with someone you get to know each other personally and your relationship grows. Pastor Saiz talks about "praying past the answer." If we are getting shut in with God every day and spending quality time with Him then when we need an answer we don't have to beg Him to let us into His presence. When we make a habit of being in His presence daily we are already there when we need to call on Him for help! In Luke 10:38-42 Martha's sister, Mary, chose to sit at the feet of Jesus and "listen to His word". When Martha complained, Jesus told her that "one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her". In Matthew 6:6, in Jesus' "Sermon on the Mount" He told the people "...when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut the door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly."

If you don't have a prayer closet I urge you to find one! Today is a good day to start spending time "shut in with God" and developing a line of communication so your relationship with Him will grow!

Proverbs 31:28 Her children (and her children-in-law and her grandchildren) arise up, and call her blessed.

Ruth 1:16 And Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:

With Mother's Day coming up Sunday I think it fitting that our first "Weekly Devotion" be about a Mother. In this case she is a very special Mother-in-law!

My Mother has been gone for twelve years but I still have my wonderful Mother-in-law! She is a special lady who has been faithful to God and faithful to pray for her children and grandchildren. Since she has lived with us for the better part of the past ten years I have seen her faithfulness first hand. I believe it's because of this that I am back living and working for God!

My Mother-in-law is the Proverbs 31 woman. As in verse 26 "She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness". She always sees the good in people and always has kind things to say about and to everyone! As in verse 27 "She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness". Although her children are all grown and she doesn't really have a household to care for she has her prayer life and her walk with God. In this way she "looketh well to the ways of her household". I know that the rest of her family members all see the same wonderful woman of God that I see and I know that because of this her prayers will be answered! All of her children and grandchildren will come to God. I have been really blessed to be the one chosen to care for her in her "Golden Years"!

Read Proverbs 31 and see how you can apply it to your life. You never know who is watching you and how your are reflecting God in your life. As for me I hope to attain the status of being called a Proverbs 31 woman! I hope that someone can say of me "Her children (and her daughters-in-law and her grandchildren) arise up, and call her blessed"!
